How Big A Factor…?

gailsimone:

Just wondering what goes into your decision to purchase a comic at a comics store? For this question, I am only talking about buying a comic off the rack at the comics shop, please.

How important is:

The cover?

The artwork?

The writer’s name?

The publisher?

The genre?

The lead character (s)?

Whether or not the story is an ‘event’ comic?

The only comics I buy off the rack are ones I get when I want to try something new.  Usually, I look at cover and genre first, then, if those look interesting, I take a look at the artwork inside and read a bit to get a feel for the writing.  If the lead character is unique, then that’s a big plus, otherwise, the lead character doesn’t really matter.

Publisher doesn’t really matter to me.  I generally keep track of what the writers I like are doing, so that’s really not a factor for “off the rack” shopping.  I generally avoid “event” comics when I’m looking for something new, since those frequently require more background to fully appreciate, and also tend to require reading more than one or two comics to get a good feel for whether or not I might like it.
